Resumo: According to the literature mortality is larger during winter compared to the other seasons in western European countries. Literature also suggests that there exists a simple chain of causality for seasonal mortality. The above-mentioned casual chain illustrates that climate triggers a biomedical reaction in the body that can result in an increased risk of mortality. Furthermore, thecauses of deaths as cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and respiratory diseases explain mortality peak in the winter. Studies also show that countries with relatively warm or moderate temperature have larger excess mortality in the winter compared to countries with harsh climatic conditions in the winter. The literature shows that social factors may also intervene in the increased mortality risk considering the presented chain of causality.
The interesting point is to search for the pattern of seasonality in human mortality in a country that does not experiences the seasons of winter, spring, summer and autumn and is part of South America and the Caribbean. Suriname as part of the amazon region has a tropical climate namely a minor rainy season from early December to early February, a minor dry season from early February to late April, a major rainy season from late April to mid-August and a major dry season from mid-August to early December.
The objective of this study is to describe the main characteristics of seasonality of human mortality in Suriname for the four seasons in the country. The research question that should be answered is what are the main characteristics of seasonality of mortality in and between the four seasons in Suriname for 2000-2022? The preliminary results show that the pattern of mortality is more homogeneous in the major rainy season and the major dry season.
